Subject: A Humane Request for Our Beloved Fair Bunnies

Dear Sonoma County Fair Competitive Exhibitions Team,

I hope this message finds you well. I’m writing today with a heartfelt request concerning the welfare of the rabbits exhibited at our wonderful Fair. These little creatures bring so much joy to families and visitors, who trust in the Fair to keep them safe and comfortable. It simply isn’t fair to patrons if the animals are in obvious danger.

As we all know, August temperatures can get hot in Santa Rosa, and rabbits are particularly vulnerable to heat stress. Their well-being is so important. I kindly ask if the Fair could consider implementing a formal heat cancellation policy to ensure no bunny suffers from heat-related illness. Additionally, providing mandated foot rests in their enclosures would offer them a much-needed respite from wire flooring, protecting their delicate feet.

Thank you for all you do to make the Fair a special event. I truly believe that adopting these compassionate measures would reflect our agricultural community being at the forefront of humane care, and enhance the Fair’s reputation as a quality and joyful celebration.

With sincere gratitude and hope,

Empathetic

Professional

To the Competitive Exhibitions Department,

I am writing to formally propose two specific policy amendments for the rabbit exhibition segments of the Sonoma County Fair livestock schedule. These are based on established animal welfare science and risk management.

1. Implementation of a Heat Cancellation Policy:

Rabbits are highly susceptible to heat stress due to their dense fur, inability to sweat, and limited cooling mechanisms. Ambient temperatures above 85°F pose a significant health risk, leading to heat stroke, which can be fatal. A clear, trigger-based policy (e.g., cancellation/modification of judging or public display when a specific heat index is forecast) seems fair, and is becoming a standard duty of care in animal husbandry. This protects the animals, ensures fair competition conditions (perhaps beyond ARBA’s standards), and mitigates potential liability and public relations risks for Sonoma County Fair and Exposition, Inc.

2. Mandate for Appropriate Flooring/Foot Rests:

Continuous contact with wire flooring can cause painful pododermatitis (sore hocks) in rabbits. This is not going to occur in their short stay at the Fair. However, mandated use of solid foot rests or mats is a simple, low-cost intervention that teaches students modern exhibition standards. It also directly impacts animal comfort and health without hindering hygiene.

Adopting these evidence-based measures would demonstrate the Fair’s commitment to progressive animal management, align practices with current welfare science, and safeguard the longevity and integrity of the competitive exhibitions.

Respectfully,

Subject: Your Neglect of the Rabbits is Unacceptable

To whoever is in charge,

I’m absolutely disgusted by the lack of basic care for the rabbits at our Fair every summer. As of 2025 you’re still letting these animals bake in the heat and some are standing on painful wire cages all day? The Fair is callously allowing suffering, literally in broad daylight.

It’s common knowledge that rabbits can’t handle heat. Yet you have no policy to protect them. That’s blatant negligence. And the wire floors without foot rests = cruel. Pets and loud sounds = cruel. This isn’t complicated. It’s basic, minimal decency.

You host a competition that depends on these animals, and you can’t even provide the bare, LEGAL minimum to keep them from suffering. It’s pathetic and shameful.

Get a heat cancellation policy NOW. Mandate foot rests NOW. Until then, the Fair isn’t being fair to animals and that’s a big problem.

Straight-Up Disrespectful
